Worried about losing your Mac?

Now if you’re one fo the proud owners of a MacBook or a MacBook Pro or any other Mac, you’d treat it with a reverence, which i bet most of you do. And no one is unfamiliar with thievery or stolen laptops due to carelessness or even when carelessness is not the case. Ask yourself this :  What would I do if my Mac got stolen? Would i buy another one? What if I’m tight on cash?

We at Tech-Beats worry about your macs just as much we worry about ours. So here’s the solution. This time a wonderful application named Undercover gives us what we want. According to Orbicule, the developers

Undercover aids in recovering a stolen Mac by transmitting its location, photos of the thief and screenshots revealing what he is up to.

Undercover, a versatile application not only provides security for your MacBook but iPhones & iPads as well.

What happens when my Mac is stolen?

Accurately locate your stolen Mac

Undercover uses advanced technology developed by Skyhook Wireless to locate your Mac based on Wi-Fi positioning. In addition, Undercover transmits network information, enabling our recovery center to accurately track and locate your stolen Mac within a range of 10-20 meters.

See what happens on your Mac

Undercover is the world’s first theft-recovery software that will send screenshots of your stolen Mac at regular intervals. These screenshots will sooner or later reveal the thief’s identity (e.g. when chatting, reading and writing emails,…) making it much easier to work with law enforcement in order to recover your Mac.

iSightSee who’s using your Mac

Undercover introduces another world first: if your Mac has a built-in or external iSight, Undercover will transmit pictures of the thief and his surroundings every 8 minutes, making it even easier to identify the current user. It’s like having a private detective working for you.

How it works

During installation, you will receive an account. You can then login to this account to view the locations of your Macs, iPhones and iPads.

Routine checks
When your Mac is not stolen, no information is transferred from your Mac to our servers. If you prefer, however, you can set Undercover to transmit its location every time your Mac starts up.

In case of theft
As soon as your Mac is stolen, you login to your Undercover account and you mark your Mac as stolen.

The first phase
The next time your stolen Mac goes online (using dial-up, WiFi, ethernet, Bluetooth, …) it will notice that it is flagged as stolen. In addition, Undercover transmits network information, screenshots and iSight pictures. You can view all this information in your account.

Plan B
If law enforcement fails to recover the stolen Mac – which is quite rare given the huge amount of information Orbicule provides them with – you can switch on plan B. In this mode, Undercover will simulate a screen failure, slowly making the Mac’s screen unusable. At this point, we think the thief has two options: to send the computer to a reseller for repair, or to get rid of it by selling it on the Net. In either case, Undercover will block the Mac and show a full-screen message. This message can be fully customized by the user and when dismissed, this message will instantly reappear. Additionally, your Mac will start shouting at the highest volume level, using its built-in text-to-speech capabilities. You have full control over plan B and what message is displayed.

Because of the message Undercover displays, technicians will quickly notice that the Mac has been stolen. As soon as you get back your Mac, simply report it found. Your Mac will immediately start to behave normally, as if nothing happened.
